Black Tutus Are Easy To Make Into Great Costumes

I have a one shoulder dress which i'd like to sew a batwing sleeve onto?
Its a black dress from miss selfridge, one side is sleeveless and the other side has a strappy sleeve about 2-3 inches wide. Quite simple, not a lot of detail on it, apart from a silvery grey panel down the front and back. I'd like to sew a black chiffony semi opaque type sleeve onto the sleeved side. Would appreciate any suggestions or advice with this xx
It's very hard to provide you with answers based on the information provided, as generally you'd need to know the physical dimensions of the sleeve hole.
But you could wing it! (Pardon the pun!) Decided on the final length of the sleeve plus seam allowances (1.5cm for each end so 3cm in total), 60cm is an average length sleeve, so the length should be 63cm long. Measure the circumfrence of the arm hole, and then the circumfrence that you'd like the bottom of your sleeve to become, and then make a pattern for checking. Use paper, newsprint or kraft paper or something similar. Then put the dress on (or better put it on a friend or a dress stand) and try fitting the paper sleeve to the dress, you'll notice that it won't fit correctly yet as it's a trapeziod shape and the top part needs to curve, as you haven't got a flat pattern for the arm hole it's rather hard to get it exact, so you'll need to move the underside of the sleeve up until it meets the dress and then mark the line on the paper around the sleeve hole, this should give you the curved shape around the sleeve head, remember to add the seam allowance back on to the sleeve cap. And add 1.5cm seam allowance to either side of the main side seams on the sleeve.
If you can unpick the arm hole you should be able to insert the sleeve in the original stiching, other wise you'll have to stitch it on underneather and then apply a binding or a ribbon or something to cover the raw edge around where you've attached it.
Although remeber this will not be exact, but as the a bat wing sleeve is normally oversized you may be able to get away with it, and hopefully it will fit. But make sure you make a paper pattern first just to check. Sleeves can be tricky things to get around at the best of times!
