Dissecting What Makes a Logo Work

They're small and simple and yet they can be really difficult to get right.

Logos aren't something you just come up with overnight unless you get really lucky and have that amazing flash of inspiration. They may look like they wouldn't take much to design, but a great logo can be a very difficult thing to get right if you don't know exactly what you're doing.

But there are a few key details you need to be aware of, and can help you get your logo going strong.

The first has to do with the complexity of the logo. The more complicated you get the less likely it is your logo will really take off. A logo needs to be on everything associated with your company, and the more complex your logo is the harder it will be to pass it around on everything.

Think about your business card printing. Complex logos aren't capable of being made as small without losing most of the details. Your business card is going to have your logo on it, meaning your logo needs to be able to be made small enough to easily fit on that business card.

This is why so many logos look very simple and easy to understand. Look at the logo for Target. You can't get more basic than that. Most car logos are also good examples because almost all of them have basic looks.

The more basic a logo looks the easier it is to make it any size you want. If you need that logo to be a massive sign on the side of your building or something small to go along with your business card printing you can easily do it.

Logos are also often presented in different colors along with different sizes, and once again if you get too complicated with your logo than you won't be able to alter it in this way as easily.

Part of this deals with only having a handful of different elements that comprise your logo. Often logos only have a few lines, or a single element to the design, and that's why it can change in size and shape without losing the overall idea of it.

Beyond the practical use of applying your logo, a simple logo is also easier to remember. If you get particularly complicated people won't be able to remember it as well. It's also nice if your logo is connected with the name of your company, as is the case with Target, but not all companies have a title that can fit so well with a particular type of logo.

The whole point of a logo is to help people remember who you are through this design. The best logos are the ones that can be used on everything you have and are easy for people to keep track of. This isn't an easy thing to do, but if you know what you're going for, you'll be in a better position to achieve it.
