How to Choose the Right Computerized Sewing Machine

Are you thinking about buying a new computerized sewing machine? If so, there are some simple things that you should consider before you spend any of your hard earned money. This way you will be sure to make the best decision.

There are quite a few computerized sewing machines on the market and they can range in price from less than $100 to $3,000, $4,000, $5,000 - or more. So one of your major considerations should be the amount you have in your budget.

One thing to keep in mind, though, is that if a sewing machine retails for less than $100 it is probably more like a toy. However, you will be able to find some pretty good sewing machines for $150 to $250.

One of the decisions you should make in advance is the type of sewing you plan to do. If you're going to be making clothing you may not need a machine that can quilt. If you're going to take your machine to sewing classes or group meetings then the weight of the machine should be a definite consideration.

A lot of the new lightweight computerized sewing machines may look rather flimsy, but some of them that have been available for the past four or five years apparently have stood the test of time.

Another consideration is where in your home you are planning to do your sewing. If you have only a small space available then a bigger machine can be more of a problem than it's worth.

One of the easiest ways to check out the quality of different sewing machines is to read reviews that were written by people who own and use the machine. The Internet is a really good source of information like this.

Because you will be using your sewing machine for many years to come, the relatively small amount of time that you invest in comparing the qualities, features, prices, and reviews of the computerized sewing machines that you're thinking about would be well worth your time.

Making garments from scratch can be a lot of fun. And imagine all the time money you can save by being able to do your own hems quickly and easily.

And now that there are a number of really affordable computerized sewing machines available the "chore" of sewing doesn't have to be a chore anymore. It's an adventure and takes people a lot less time than it used to only ten or twenty years ago.

HI I purchased the Brother computerized CP6500 sewing machine.

Your machine (according to the manual) takes clear plastic Class 15 bobbins. Don't try to substitute metal bobbins for plastic. It comes with 4, so that should be enough to get going on.

You'll also need a good pair of scissors, a few pins, some spare needles, a decent measuring tape, and some time.

Minimal list:

-- a package of sewing machine needles (you'll break some as you learn) -- I'd suggest size 80/12 universal points

-- a good pair of sewing scissors -- orange handled Fiskars for cheap; Kai or other better brand for good. You want the bent handled shears shaped like this:

If at all possible, buy the largest pair you can open fully one-handed, and cut from the pivot to the tip of the blade. That's usually 9.5-11" for most women.

-- some sort of measuring tool -- I like a 120" tape measure, fiberglas or vinyl, metric on one side like:

… but a 60" one will do for most sewing. Paper and fabric tape measures shrink and stretch and aren't accurate over time.

-- some thread. Buy decent thread (I won't use Coats unless forced). Try Gutermann, Superior, Mettler, Molnlycke, Valdani.... here's why:

Buy two spools of colors you're likely to use sometime --different colors but identical threads. They'll be handy when you're learning your machine. Put a different color in the bobbin than on top.

-- some pins. I like the yellow-headed quilting pins for beginners because they're big and obvious and they'll remind you not to sew over them. And a dish or pincushion. My favorite pin dish is a corelle cereal bowl with a magnet from a disk drive on the outside bottom. You can make your own pincushion as an early project. You can buy some good silk pins like Iris when you start sewing with fine fabrics.

-- a seam ripper. Get a good one, because you'll be frogging a lot when you're new to sewing ("frog-stitching="rip-it! rip-it!") Cheap seam rippers often have snaggly points and are unhelpful. The white handled Clover brand rippers are my pick.

-- a yard of plain white muslin, 45" wide.. You're going to rip this fabric in half lengthwise, then rip one of halves into pieces about 27x24 and 27x12" wide. You've now got a set of press cloths. You can hand whip or buttonhole the edges of the smallest piece to prevent fraying as an early lesson in hand sewing, and machine stitch the edges of the larger piece as an early lesson in machine stitching. Or not, as you choose.

-- a packet of hand sewing needles. Sharps are traditional; I prefer embroidery/crewel needles because of the larger eye.

-- a piece of white tailor's chalk, the chalky kind, or a white chalk pencil or a white chakoner. This is the only method I'll use for marking on fabrics. Air erase or water erase marking pens have the bad habit of coming back as permanent stains later. I don't know anyone still using tracing paper. Colored chalks stain. White chalk won't let you down.

-- an iron. A Black and Decker Classic is a good cheap solution.

-- an old cotton bathtowel or an ironing board because you're going to be pressing a lot of seams -- some days you'll be pressing more than you're sewing. If you're going to buy an ironing board for sewing, one with a plain canvas or muslin cover is a better choice than the aluminized fabric covers.
