This chemical treatment modifies and improves the physiochemical surface and internal structure of cotton fibers.
Cotton fiber is gathered from the seed pod of the cotton plant and ginned. A gin is a machine that separates the seeds from the cotton fiber. It was invented by Eli Whitney in 1793 and is one of the revolutionary events in cotton processing. The fiber is then spun into thread and woven into fabric. The commercial process is actually far more complicated and complex but those are the general steps.

Yarn spinners, textile mills and apparel manufacturers operate in an increasingly competitive environment in which they need to produce high quality products while operating on razor thin margins. However, over the past several years, textile manufacturers have been complaining about cotton fiber quality, which has been decreasing in terms of fiber length and strength.
