Cotton Vs. Synthetic Hammocks
Hammocks have been long desired for years. Lying in a hammock in your own back yard is a relaxation sensation. The question is what type of hammock should you buy. Should you choose a synthetic rope hammock or a cotton rope? Both have their own list of pros and cons and hopefully this review will help you decide which is best for you.
Cotton Hammocks
Cotton is natural, it's breathable, and it forms to your body. When you lay on a cotton hammock the comfort you experience is unprecedented. Lots of things around are made from cotton, our clothes, our sheets, T-shirts, and long underwear. It seems to me what matters most in relaxation is comfort and the cotton hammock provides the most exquisite comfort available.
If organic and all-natural products matter to you than the cotton hammock is the way to go with no doubt. Certainly it goes without saying that there are drawbacks to purchasing a cotton hammock. The downfall about a cotton purchase is that sometimes the prices are higher and that they don't last as long as synthetic hammocks do. The reality with cotton hammocks lies in the daily care required in order to preserve your hammock for an extended period of time. Cotton hammocks do best when they are re-moved from the elements on a daily basis and when excessive sun exposure is limited. If you are not willing to take down your hammock and put it away after each use then this style is not for you. Some folks remove hammocks on a daily basis other leave them until they need a new one. If cost is not an issue and replacing it as needed is little concern then perhaps the cotton hammock is right for you. If daily maintenance is your thing then go for the cotton hammock. If comfort is your goal then how can you put a price on it?
Synthetic Hammocks
Synthetic means that it is manmade. It is produced by man using different chemicals. What this means to you as the consumer is that they make a material that will last. Synthetic hammocks are durable and weather resistant. They can withstand the moist environment and harsh elements, although recommended to bring in for the winter it is less likely that they will rot or get mildew and mold. Simply put the greatest asset that synthetic hammocks provide to the consumer is longevity without maintenance. This longer life span makes it a better bang for your buck. The reality is that this synthetic hammock provides longer life with less maintenance but the consumer must be willing to forgo some comfort. There are more expensive synthetic hammock's that provide near cotton comfort but get ready to take out your wallet. Personally, I choose synthetic hammocks with a quality pillow because I choose not to take my hammock down on a daily basis.
Final thoughts:
So really the choice is up to you. Do you want comfort or do you want durability? Both styles of hammocks are pleasing to the eye and will get the job done. The job of rocking you into relaxation as you lay looking at the stars or enjoying the latest novel of your choice will be accomplished. However, your butt may thank you for the comfort choice of the cotton hammock and your wallet may thank you for the quality but less expensive synthetic hammock. Will rain damage a cotton rope hammack?
What "I am, I said," is correct. I've had a cotton hammock that I've hung out for 10 years. (I do bring it in during the winter months.) It has not rotted at all. If it could not dry out between rains, it would indeed mildew, but that is not usually the case unless you were to live in a jungle. It can get a bit grimy after a season outside, but you can wash it in a mild soap and water solution and it cleans right up. The wooden stretcher, however, will eventually rot if you don't put varnish on it every year or so.
