Agent Zigzag: The Double Agent with Double the Luck
Eddie Chapman was a prolific spy who simply rode his luck (that's what we think, he may differ). His British controllers called him Agent Zigzag, as he was working for Germans initially, and then he was recruited by the British. Even Scotland Yard was looking for him for the robberies he conducted in the pre-war period. Eddie Chapman is just the right subject for any book, a man who knew many languages (learnt from women he wooed) and a self styled gentleman conman (these words don't sound nice together).
Went AWOL to Blow Safes
He had to leave the army because he went absent without leave; he was also doing things others believed unthinkable – blowing safes, dressing well and he also charmed women in the Soho nightclubs. There was a time when he lived with Terence Young in the same flat. Terence Young later went on to become a director of James Bond films. Eddie Chapman's life is fascinating because his social life was prolific, and the type of company kept by him was unselective, though it helped him in being a good spy. His charm offensive, however, seems to be hard work because of his depressions (another contradiction).
Fortunate Arrest in Jersey
He took care of the robbery charges by getting himself arrested for other offences in Jersey. He was soon in trouble when Nazis arrived there. He was dispatched to a French prison, where he offered himself to work as a German spy in Britain. Once he reached Britain, he promptly went to the British authorities who decided to use him as a double agent. Eddie Chapman's pre-war life was full of excitement whereas the reality of working as a British Agent was extremely dull. He was placed in a safe house with minders in toe and the only dangers he flirted with included the parachute jumps, loss of teeth and back trouble.
Germans Were Better Handlers
His German handlers were better (for him), and the organization he worked for was Abwehr, which was more interested in manipulating expenses rather than espionage. His German controller found it to be profitable for him to continue using Eddie Chapman, the man. He was a prized catch and was also awarded with an Iron Cross, the only Englishman who got this award. He got this award because German's believed he blew up a British aircraft factory, which was just a ploy by the British so he could win the trust of his German masters.
You Told Him, He Did It
Eddie Chapman was never short of women which he managed even in prison due to his lock tampering skills. His negative tendencies floated to the surface again when he fixed dog races in London. MI5 dropped him quickly but they did him one huge favour. His criminal records were wiped clean. Despite all his double dealings, it was widely believed if he was told to do something; it was certain he would do it.
