Getting a Pattern to Fit - The Biggest Problem in Home Sewing
Sewing patterns are a very important part of a dress. They can make your dress look like an angel or a pauper. In easier terms, it would not be wrong to say, that sewing patterns are the fairy godmother that can change your Cinderella dress form into a beautiful princess. But this fairy godmother can act like a really evil queen at times. You might get the best of patterns and they might not suit your dress.
This is a very common fact and nearly almost all of you who have ever tried to sew your own dress have faced this problem at least once. So what do you do? Do you give up and try buying those factory made tops that are available with the same design in over a hundred sizes? Or do you settle for the heavy priced, lowly durable designer's clothes?
Even if you opt for either of the two, some people are really creative to be bound within confines. They just like to experiment and there is nothing wrong with experimentation. Provided it is done with an informed knowledge.
Home sewing is an effective way of giving shape to your inner artist. Standard sized patterns can really spoil the show as most of the time they are not properly made and thus need to be adjusted for the specific wearer. Now this adjustment is another pain in the wrong place.
This is the reason why many people give up sewing their own dress after the first and second try. The fuss involved with standard sewing patterns is just too much! So what is the next option available?

The super thing that you can do is make your own sewing patterns! There are different kinds of sewing pattern making tools like rulers available for this purpose. In fact, you can also use a pattern making system for this purpose. The Lutterloh Pattern Making System is by far the best in the business.
All you need to do is take your measurements and make the increments as prescribed in the system. Then you fit the pattern to your dress form and lo! You have a new dress! This is a very safe bet if you want to try your own hand at sewing.
There are two main rulers used to make own pattern designs. These are the Tailor's Curve and the Designer's Curve. If you have these two in your stock, you can rest assured that your pattern will be one of the finest.
How to do this?
Making a sewing pattern will however require you to do some research. You have to have a proper knowledge about the particular pattern drafting system that you are using. At the same time, you also need to know about the various tools used for that pattern. The internet can be very helpful in this respect. However the real thing has to be done by you only.
A lot of people feel scared when they are first asked to design a pattern by themselves. But there is no need for fear. With the spread of net and pattern making tools, it has become really easy to make exciting patterns all by yourself. It is not absolutely necessary that you have a prior base of sewing for this. There is a first time to everything.

Any major brand. There are different models with a variety of prices. You need to add a walking foot to help keep the fabric layers from shifting.
Look at sewing machine shops in your area and Argos.
You do not need a "strong" machine to sew minky/minkee. Nor do you need one with a lot of stitch functions. Straight and zig-zag will be all that is needed.
