For a successful and professional looking sewing project, the right set of tools is essential. Without them, you'll have a hard time finishing your project with ease. Good quality tools are also important, especially for the sewing task.
So what are the essential tools you need to finish your sewing project? Would a needle, thread and a pair of scissors suffice? Though you can make do with these tools, the right set will entail more than that.
Before you start any project, you need to make sure you have the tools you can use. Whether it's as simples as repairing some tears from your child's clothing or making a pillow case, you need tools, tools and tools.
When it comes to sewing, you have two options. You can either hand sew it or you can use a sewing machine. Though using a sewing machine is the easier method, there are projects that really need to be sewn, like for gowns with beads. You need to really sew the beads to the fabric yourself.
Some of the basic sewing tools for any sewing project are:
- A good pair of scissors
This is one of the most important tools you need in your sewing kit or basket. You will use this for cutting cloth, patterns and string. If you will use them for other projects like cutting paper, it will just dull the blades and result to less-smooth edges for your hems and seams. It may also snag some of your more delicate materials. Just make sure that you only use your sewing scissors for sewing and not for anything else. Aside from soiling the blade, residues can also accumulate on it and cause stains on your garment.
When buying scissors, find a good pair that are about 8 to 10 in. long. You can also buy custom scissors in various sizes. If you want a pair that would last, you can go for those with are put together with a screw. The good thing about this type is that the blades can just be removed for sharpening.
- Pin cushion
You can buy this in different sizes and shapes. They also perform multiple functionalities. They are for storing pins and for sharpening pins. There are also those that have a magnetic center so that you can easily pick up pins that are accidentally dropped. There are also those that are featured as wristbands so that you can just wear the pins while sewing.
- Seam gauge or buttonhole
These two basically perform the same functionalities. They are used for placing button holes or seams. They are also used for spacing pleats, for measuring hems and for making tucks.
- Seam ripper
These are small hook-shaped knives. They are very important in every sewing kit or basket. They are use for removing stitches. All you need to do is to slide the seam ripen through the stitches and you can already remove the stitching completely.

What's the best bra for me to wear under my bridal gown?
I had cups sewn up but there was no underwire so my boobs look flat. I am a 36 D and not flat! My dress is strapless. What can I use to perk them up? I am thinking a nubra. Has anyone tried it?
I am also a D cup, and I wore a corset under mine. You will probably have to purchase several undergarments to try on with your dress, and you need to have your dress altered after you find the appropriate garment. I have not tried a nubra, but I'm not sure you're getting to get enough support with that. You want to be smooth and seamless from top to bottom no matter how you sit or stand, which is why I recommend a corset or a bust-to-thigh type of garment.
