Bring Out Your Inner Fashion Designer At The Clothing Sale

The sunset, a bowl of fruits, a park and the evening city skyline can stimulate ideas. Any artist will tell you that inspiration lies everywhere. So it's not a joke when women's clothing on sale can turn on the inner fashion designer in you.

Have you ever gone to a sale, picked up an item and saw it as part of a different piece altogether? Perhaps you saw that long dramatic evening gown as your next little black dress. Or have you imagined a series of funky embellishments in that pack of tank tops. If so, don't suppress that creativity any longer. Chances are that you're a fashion designer waiting to bloom.

Painters have their paints and easels. Sculptors have their clay and carving tools. Likewise, fashion designers have their sewing machines and fabric.

If you plan on experimenting in making your own clothes, getting cheap clothes are an alternative to buying fabric. The basic structure of the dress is already established and waiting for you to make your imprint. You also get to pay more attention to how designs are cut out, what makes them work and otherwise.

Women's clothing on sale further shows you how trends come and go. As a designer, you can learn much about what makes things faddish and challenge yourself in transforming them into something relevant and unique. It's also the fastest way to having something that nobody else has. If you fear being seen wearing something similar as another person in the same room, time to get your sewing machine and imagination running. 

 Deconstruction is the name of the game when playing around with sale items. Consider the fun things you can do to unleash that creativity:

Snip away. Whether it be shortening or eliminating sleeves, raising hemlines or lowering waistlines and necklines, a pair of scissors and a good eye is the simplest way to change the look.

Build it up. If tearing down is not your style, add embellishments or replace parts of the item with something else. This works best with very simple, borderline boring pieces. Consider stitching in beads, iron on your own design, adding patches, replacing pockets with another kind of fabric, outlining with trims and ribbons, etc. You can also consider replacing the color by dyeing.

Transform. We've seen skirts become bags, pants become skirts and ties become belts. Pajama tops can even transform into book bags. There's more than one way to wear or use something.

Update. Vintage clothing and last season's fads are just classics waiting to happen. Perhaps it needs a higher hemline. Or maybe all you need to do is change the buttons.

Treat that dingy second-hand clothing shop, or the sale bin of last season's trends or the yard sale as your gold mine. There will always be pieces that are waiting for you to do magic.

A little fearless creativity and a bit of sewing will get you clothes that let you standout. Perhaps your friends will get on the idea and turn to you to jazz up their threads. Then maybe a serious career in fashion design is not too distant.

(1) False. The grain line is the straight line in the center of the pattern.
Broken lines on old patterns are the stitching line.

(2) False. You adjust the width of the entire pattern. Adjusting just at the hemline would make for a triangular shaped pattern.

(3) Sewing. The instruction sheet shows, pattern pieces for each option, adjustment, layout, & marking,
