Iron Patch
Iron On Patches: 5 Tips On Attaching Them
Handy to the extreme, iron on patches are great as a quick fix for when holes or stubborn stains develop on clothes. They're also useful for jazzing up a garment or a bag or a baseball cap. Still, there's more to just slapping one on then using an iron. So, take heed of the following tips lest you find you suffer a patch fail.
Guidelines
Manufacturers of iron on patches include guidelines/instructions for a reason. They want to make sure that you get the best possible use out of the patch that you have bought. With this in mind, despite the advice you may read here, you're still better off following the instructions provided with the patch.
Material
There are some fabric materials that you really should not attach patches to. Commonly they tend to be materials made from elastic or plastic based fibres (like Nylon). The instructions with the patch should hopefully outline what not to affix to. As a general rule: if you wouldn't iron the material normally, because the heat would damage it, then it's a bad idea to affix a patch to it.
Fixing
Should you be using a patch to fix a hole or tear in a garment or a bag, often it's a wise idea to roughly sew up as much of the damage as possible. This will provide a better surface to affix the patch to. And make sure that if the patch is going over a hole or tear that the adhesive on it doesn't end up sticking onto material that is on the opposite side to the damage.
Wash
Whatever you plan to sewn your patch onto, ensure that it's clean first. Any dirt on the garment could interfere with the adhesive that iron on patches use. Of course, if you're patching up something in order to fix it and are worried about the damage getting worse, then you could hand wash the item in question to ensure the damage does not worsen.
Sew
This may appear an unusual tip for iron on patches, but if your patch is being attached to something that will be washed on a regular basis or exposed to the elements, sewing the patch on after ironing it on will ensure it lasts. Still iron the patch on first of course.
