Recommendation for sewing machine for quilting?
I'm just getting started with quilting and I don't want to hinder myself with bad equipment. I'm also not sure exactly what to look for. Any recommendations (with links if possible) for something affordable for a beginner would be greatly appreciated.
Start with visiting sewing machine dealers. Tell them what you want to do and they will help you select a sewing machine that has:
(1) a large harp (area to the right of the presser foot) to accommodate the bulk of a quilt
(2) a feature to drop or disengage the feed dogs (for free motion/thread drawing)
(3) a free motion or darning foot
(4) pressure adjustment for the presser foot
(5) a 1/4" presser foot for piecing accurate seams
Every dealer will have more than one brand and model. Take notes. Sleep on it and then buy from the dealer you like the best as he/she will be the one to answer any questions, help you will sewing and some have classes for beginner quilters.
