Can you sew vinyl with a standard sewing machine needle?
I have some clear vinyl I want to sew,
I'm new to sewing, so I'm wondering if the needle that came in my machine is okay to use?

You need to use a slightly heavier needle, and a leather point is best. Leather point needle have a cutting point which allows easier penetration of the vinyl. If you use a standard needle use a 16, the size used for jeans. Additional tip: Place something over the vinyl while sewing to allow even feeding without sticking. Vinyl is sticky and won't feed under your machine if you don't place something between it and the foot. Tissue paper works well, you tear it off after sewing. But even better is "solvy" water soluble plastic film. It's allows vinyl to feed evenly, and after you cut way the excess, use a damp cloth to sponge away the excess film.
BTW- you need to change the needle to match the type and weight of your fabric, and you need to change the needle after many hours of sewing. Needles get dull with time, and using the proper needle for the job will make sewing easier and your sewing will look more professional.
