my dads native american & my moms white. When i was born the nurse put down on my birth certificate that i was native american. I have an great grandma that used live on a reservation but she passed away. i heard that you have to have some type of enrollment # or something. what do i need to get to get documentation? I just needed to know because i'm applying for colleges. i have always claimed native american. i don't know if i need something in paper ready to show to colleges.
Seriously, the steps really matter in what tribe you are. Different tribes have different qualifications. Alot of times undocumented native americans are actually less native american than they actually thought. I've known alot of people who go around saying their father or mother is full blooded when they are only half or a quarter.
Steps to documentation:
1 (COMPLETELY NECESSARY) Find out what tribe or tribes you are.
2 Find out what blood quantum qualifies you to be in that tribe, the majority of tribes won't take anything less than 1/4th.
3 Contact the tribal enrollment office
4 Find you ancestor on the rolls (the 'indian rolls')
5 Prove your relation to this ancestor via birth certificates that are legally made (not photocopied cheaply)
6 Mail this in to the office along with any other paperwork required.
and months later, you are tribally enrolled as soon as they accept you.
