Dressing up in a 50s costume is easy and fun
In 1952 Britain was still carrying the scars of a World War. Proof was everywhere in war torn Europe. Open bomb sites with their crumbling buildings were set amid a new sort of design, half built blocks of flats. These were the 1st appearances of redevelopment. Thru Britain, folks still produced identity cards and housewives queued on cold pavements, nursing their ration books.
Newly arrived back in Downing Street, London, Churchill started his reign of office by taking a look at the stern diet of the country. He called for one week's food ration to be set out before him. To his horror it was set out on a small tray. The whole rations for one week were what he would normally have anticipated to eat at one breakfast!
Ladies, girls, men and teens all desired look-alike copies of outfits, accessories and jewellery worn by the hottest screen idols. One way to achieve the look was to make your own garments and customise them so they had a similar look to fashions worn by celebs of the day. Made in a dear fabric like shot silk home dressmakers could save pounds by making her own dresses. When trimmed with a fashionable fake flower and a matching nicked added, the outfit offered a factor of originality amid mass produced products. A dress pattern could just as simply be made up in a washer-friendly cotton as a summer dress.
The Second World War left women craving for glamour which they managed to recreate themselves. Dressmaking Pattern makers such as Butterick, McCall's, Simplicity, vogue together with mags like woman, woman's Own and Woman's Weekly all answered by creating trendy dress patterns.
Back in 1952 the fashion world succumbed to the new sweater girl and the more casual looks of jeans. The jeans of the 50s prepared the ground for a new kind of fashion that emerged in the sixties, ripping open the sector of haute couture.
Brand name clothes were becoming so good and so popular that vogue mag bestowed the final accolade by recommending Jaegar, Dereta, Brenner Marcus, Rima, Mary Black and Susan Little to its readers.
Hemlines which had plunged fast with the new look, ultimately settled at mid calf length, eleven and 1 / 4 inches off the ground. Dolman sleeves, swing back coats and stand away collars were popular. Skirts may be pencil slim or a mass of sun ray pleats.

Can i use this pattern with damask fabric?
Can i use Butterick B4827, which has princess seams with a damask pattern fabric? Or will it be a nightmare trying to get it to line up?

I think it'll be fine. Just center the damask pattern on the bodice, and then if you really want to, you can try to make the left side front match the right side front. The princess seams are not a problem because the eye expects the pattern to change on a seam line. The back is all one piece, so you're all set there as well.
