Thinking Getting You Down? Time to Reframe Your Thought Patterns!
I had a weight loss client recently explain how upset she was at her husband for allowing an eight-year-old girl to accompany their young daughter into their home one afternoon. The husband was there along with another father from the neighborhood and, according to this woman, the little girl “Had no business in my house.” She was upset because the girls’ mom didn’t know where she was. As she was recounting the story she was getting more emotional and upset. Here is an abbreviated transcript of the conversation: Me: “What are you upset with and why? Client: “My husband. He was in the house with another man from the neighborhood. Our daughter walked in with an eight-year old girl that we didn’t know. Her mother didn’t even know where she was. She had no business in my house!” Me: “What about her being in your house upsets you?” Client: (getting agitated) “My husband should not have let her in the house. In this day and age, she could have said anything. Her mother didn’t even know she was there. She had no business being in my house! She could say anything and we could lose everything!” Me: “Is she a friend of your daughters or did she just walk in off the street?” Client: “No, she’s a friend.” Me: “Is your daughter allowed to bring friends in the house?” Client: “Not if their mother doesn’t know where she is!” Me: “Is that your daughters’ fault?” Client: “No.” Me: “Is it the girls’ fault?” Client: “She should tell her mother where she is, but she’s only eight. I think the mother should know where her daughter is.” Me: “Couldn’t your husband have called the girl’s mother to tell her she was over at the house?” Client: “I didn’t think of that. Yeah, that would have been good.” Me: “Do you trust your husband not to molest little girls?” Client: “Of course, but her mother didn’t know where she was. She could have said anything.” Me: “Couldn’t the little girl say anything regardless of whether or not her mother knew where she was?” Client: “I never thought of that.” Me: “In reality, the fact the mother didn’t know where she was at would probably work in your favor if something ever was said, because she could be painted as somewhat negligent.” Client: “You’re right. I never thought of that either.” Me: “Can you see how you created wasted stress for yourself and your husband over something that didn’t exist? Certainly, you want the girl to be safe and you know she was safe with your husband. Any little girl can say anything at anytime. Your husband was in the house with another man and your daughter. Was there really a threat to be concerned about?” Client: “When you put it that way, I guess not…” This is a classic FEAR scenario. She created stress by responding to a False Expectation that the girl might accuse her husband of molesting her. She was so upset that it was as if it was Appearing Real. Of all the possible scenarios, she chose to frame the incident in the most negative. By walking her through the scenario in a more realistic manner, I was able to help her to reframe the situation with a more honest perspective. Yes, we’d like for the girl’s mom to know where she is, but that didn’t really increase the risk factor for her husband in that scenario. When she said, “When you put it that way…” she was recognizing how I had reframed it. She framed the situation as a potential to lose everything. I “put it” in a more realistic frame with little or no risk or stress attached to it. I used this as an example for her about how she is creating massive amounts of stress for herself and her family with negative thought patterns. Some people have patterns that seek out the most negative possible outcome and focus on that. They delude themselves into thinking that they are being responsible when they worry and project that negative energy on anyone who’ll listen. In reality, people who frame the world that way are exhausting to be around and, in time, often slip into depression. The client in the above example is on medication for depression. She framed the world in such a negative way that it came as no surprise that she was a comfort eater. In subsequent sessions, she said she was starting to “catch herself” framing situations in the negative. She was learning to explore other ways to look at the possibilities rather than embracing the first negative pattern that emerged. This client had a hard time at first, seeing the situation, as anything but “That girl had no business in my house.” It wasn’t until I walked her through the scenario as described above that she could see other, healthier more positive possibilities. Then she was able to intellectually “reframe” the situation into more realistic perspective. With practice, she can begin to reweave her patterns to reframe situations into more positive, hopeful scenarios.
