The history of heraldry

The study of heraldry is complex and is almost more of an art than it is a science. This is because there are different meanings to the colors, patterns and even shapes that some coats of arms will take. The combination of each of these elements can combine to tell a rich story about a family's history and accomplishments.

Heraldry has been around for thousands of years. It slowly evolved from very basic signs and symbols to ones that were much more complex. It is unknown where heraldry and the use of coats of arms or family crests began although there are many theories.

Heraldry in pre-dynastic Egypt
Part of the reason why the origins of heraldry are so difficult to discover is the fact that many different countries and cultures used signs or symbols for identification. Civilizations such as the ancient Egyptians used emblems to identify things such as the allegiances that military units had, the influence that a particular regime had on certain portions of society and even who trade goods belonged to. It is theorized that these symbols may have evolved into the system of hieroglyphics that were used as the Egyptian written language.

Often the symbols used in ancient Egyptian heraldry were based on animals. In some cases the animals were skinned before being attached to a staff or standard. In others, the animal's entire body would be mounted on staves or on standards. In other symbols, a striped or cross-hatched box with an animal drawn on top would represent a city or a palace.

Heraldry in other areas of the ancient world
Heraldry took on other forms in other areas of the world. Warriors in areas such as ancient Europe were in the practice of carrying shields for protection when they engaged in battle. Often these were decorated with signs or symbols. Some would be mythological in origin and other patterns would be more geometric in nature. These were not passed down from father to son the way coats of arms or crests would be.

The first individual who wore a recognized coat of arms was Geoffrey V, the son-in-law of King Henry I of England. Geoffrey was the Count of Anjou. He was in the practice of wearing a shield around his neck that was colored with gold and blue and which bore the pattern of golden lions on it. It was buried with him when he died in 1151 CE. Over time, the practice of heraldry became very regimented and formal. This was necessary as many more individuals were choosing to wear coats of arms. It was not uncommon to find coats of arms reproduced on jewelry, on papers and even as wax seals that were used to verify and authenticate important documents.

Heraldry today
Although individuals no longer wear shields into battle and there are other methods of authenticating a person and identifying their family, heraldry remains popular today. A large number of individuals are interested in researching the coat of arms or crest that their ancestors bore and once it has been discovered, they wish to display it as a plaque, embroidered piece of clothing or even as a signet ring.

My uncle gave me what appears to be a military or masonic sash. Please click on the link below for pictures.

Sounds interesting, but the photo link is password protected. My guess is that it is not military but a civic organization, 'secret' society or a fraternal organization or club.

*Edit:* With a little more looking, I discovered that the government of Greece has an award called the "Order of the Phoenix" look at this link and see if your example compares.

*Edit2* Not Greek. They would not use the Roman letters C, L, D or G. I believe this is Masonic. Specifically the Phoenix Lodge of Freemasonry. PLNC Phoenix Lodge (North Carolina?) The phoenix, 8-pointed star, handclasp can all be found in their symbolism. If you still live in the city where your uncle got it, consider asking a local mason of it's specific meaning.
