Tudor Clothes: How Do We Know?

Before you even think about looking online for Tudor clothes, you might want to make sure first that what you're really buying is genuine Tudor design. While there are many sellers of Tudor clothes, nothing still beats knowing the basics of genuine Tudor.
Tudor clothes are beautiful ornate clothing popular during Queen Elizabeth I's reign. These clothes were meant to display a person's social standing in terms of wealth. The rich were able to buy expensive materials such as wool, silk or linen; their clothes were heavily embroidered with thread in gold, decorated with very expensive jewels as accessories. The rich were always dressed to impress because their clothing denoted their wealth and importance in society.
Rich men were often dressed in skirts that are padded, which were held up using loops. On top of this, they added a doublet, somewhat like a fitting jacket), and striped trousers known as hose.

Rich women dressed with skirts that are padded as well. On top of these, they'd choose to use bodices of colourful gowns.
Everyone had their at shoulder's length.
Why did Tudors use ruffs and why were the ladies all covered up?
The clothing at the time were fashionable as how skinny jeans or straight-cut jeans are today. It was the ‘in thing' to use ruffs for men and for women to make sure that their stomachs were as well as they could muster by using corsets and donning on wide skirts.
But how about the poor?
The poor didn't have the priviledge before to wear such expensive garments. Their clothes  were rather simple, loose in fitting and were made from woollen cloth. Men of the time wore wool trousers, and tunics that were so long, reached the part above their knees. Women, however, dressed in garments made out of wool that went to the ground. They often had aprons worn over their clothes and bonnets on top of their heads.
How do we know what Tudors wore?
You can always look at paintings from long ago that depict the rich in Tudor clothing. There are also several paintings that portray the poor and you could use that in order to see what they wore then.

What kind of Madame Alexander doll is this?

I have a Madame Alexander doll that is about one foot tall and I need to find out how much she is worth. She isn't new and I'm pretty sure she is vintage. She has blonde hair pulled back with a blue bonnet, a blue coat with a matching cape-type thing, a pink ankle legnth pleated skirt and black boots. In her left hand she is holding silver ice skates. If anybody can tell me what type of doll is, the year she was made, her price or anything that would be very helpful! Thanks!

P.S. I think my cat chewed on her boot so it's a little torn up. How much will that effect the value of the doll?

Its hard to tell from your description the year of your Madame Alexander doll. The clothes are always tagged and up under the hair on the back of the neck is a mark as well. The answers will help me id your doll easier. Alexander has been in business since 1920's and has produced skaters since Sonja Henie. But you seem to think your doll is 12" and the company made only two types of dolls in the size range. Cissette and a Lissy or Pamela most were 8" and 14 plus inches.

I have repaired a 14" doll from the early 1940's who was dress in blue trimmed in white fur. Every year since 1939 she did make ballerina's and skating dolls. So look and give me the items I have asked for and I will cross reference this for you, email me Always glad to help.

Check this out here is a guide to all madame faces over the years this will help too

http://www.dollreference.com/alexander_doll_face_molds.html

Here is a bit about the first one
1939 Sonja Henie, 14-15, 18 & 21" tall, (Olympic gold medalist ice skater & movie star), all composition, blonde curly wig, brown sleep eyes, open mouth showing four teeth, dimples, fully jointed, some have swivel or twist waist, usually dressed in a skating outfit but they used this head mold for some WWII military dolls and a Bride. Some of the small sized dolls used the Wendy Ann face. Usually marked: Sonja Henie/Madame Alexander. Clothing will also have the Sonja Henie name included on the tag.

Arranbee also made a Sonja Henie doll and should have the R & B marking on her neck, which means it isn't made by Alexander.
