Printed Silk Fabrics Sewing Tips: How to make a tie?
Ties are almost all mass produced these days. People do not take the time to custom make a tie like they would get measured for a tailor made suit. Part of the reason is that they simply don't know how to make a tie. But making a tie is as simple as any other article of clothing.
Things you'll need:Needle and thread or sewing machine: sharp scissors, sewing pattern, chalk!
1. Finding the right silk may require a little bit of research. Lay the silk out face down and iron out the creases if necessary
2. Trace the pattern with the chalk on the back side of the silk and cut along the lines. Make sure that you do not stretch the silk while you chalking the lines.
3. Chalk the stitch lines as well before sewing the pieces together.
4. Attach the back sides of the facing to the base section and sew along the stitch lines. Then flip the end inside out.
5. Repeat the previous step with the other end of the.
6. Attach the two halves together
7. With the silk sewn together, make the necessary folds towards the center of the tie, making sure that the final product is symmetrical.
8. Press the sides of the tie on the back side with an iron to make creases.
9. Stitch the tie closed along the center of the back side with a slip stitch. Leave a little slack so that the tie can stretch a bit without snapping the thread.
10. Try on the tie and enjoy.

What is a good 100% cotton thread to use when sewing stretch knit fabrics?
I am looking to find a good 100% cotton thread to use when sewing garments from stretch knits. A book I have states that stretch knits should be sewed using thread that has stretch such as long staple polyester or textured threads. I can't use polyester thread since I will be dying the garments after they are completed, and I can't find textured cotton thread on serger cones anywhere (I can only find mercerized cotton). Any thoughts? Does anyone know where I can find textured cotton thread, or would I be ok using mercerized cotton??
Make a sample using the cotton - buy one spool and wind a bobbin and stitch on the sewing machine. Dye, and then you be the judge.
