is the tension out of my garage door torsion spring?
I am completely removing the garage door from my house, and i have already removed the door its self, all that is left is the torsion springs (mounted in center of doorway). My question is, if the lift cable had been cut on each side and spun unwound, Is there still tension in the torsion spring, or is there a way to let it out by unwinding the cable. I know how to let the tension out of the spring from the winding cone, but I don't know if there is any tension to release
If the door is gone, and the cables are cut, there should be no tension.
An easy way to test if there is any tension is to grab the 3/4" pipe that goes through with a pair of pliers and gently try to turn it. If it moves freely, there is no tension. If it doesn't, DO NOT try to release it by "unwinding" the cable. You could lose some fingers, or worse.
Since you know how, the safest thing would be to have your 1/2" bar in the winding cone, release the spring and take it from there.
