Swimming Pool Safety-Pool Rules

On a hot, sunny day there is nothing like stepping out the back door and lounging around the swimming pool with a cold drink.  Florida has over a million swimming pools, most of them belonging to private residences.  But with the benefits and pleasures of a swimming pool come the dangers and risks which are inevitably attached.

Infant and Toddler Deaths

Every year hundreds of children under the age of 5 drown in swimming pools due to the lack of supervision and safety measures which could have saved them.  Most of these deaths happen in private pools while parents are nearby.  Most of the parents who lose their children to swimming pool accidents are not neglectful or abusive parents, but were simply distracted by something as simple as a phone call or a doorbell.

Pool Injuries

Not every swimming pool accident results in death.  Many of them can lead to injuries, such as head injuries from slipping and falling, or from diving into too-shallow water.  Often, swimming pool safety comes down to simply being careful and following pool protocols.  Even for individuals who are following swimming pool rules, however, the danger of an improperly cared for pool or obstructions in pathways can lead to injuries.  If you or a loved one has been injured at a public swimming pool, you may need to be able to give evidence that you were not acting irresponsibly or against posted rules at the time of your injury.

Pool Rules

If you are swimming at a public pool, you should carefully read the posted swimming pool rules and be careful to follow them all.  If no diving signs are posted near shallow water, diving into the pool may not only have you banned from the pool, but could cause injury or death.  Although many people treat pool rules as suggestions, they are admissible evidence in court cases.  If you are swimming in a private pool, you should follow commonly posted pool rules, even though you are at a private residence.  These include:

  • No running
  • Don't swim alone
  • Keep pool ladders and stairs, diving boards and walkways clear of obstructions
  • Never leave children unsupervised
  • Have your younger children wear floatation devices
  • Enroll your children in kids' or toddler swimming classes

Does my toddler need to wear ear plugs when swimming?

I'm getting ready to start a mommy & me swimming class with my 14 month old son. Do I need to do anything special like ear plugs?

Most ear infections are in the MIDDLE ear and typically caused by blocked (non-draining) Eustachian tubes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_ear. The eardrum is a effective, waterproof barrier between the middle ear and the pool water. Earplugs in this context are a placebo.
