Historically, nurses have maintained a distinctive profile in the hospital because of the uniform that they wore. The uniform has always been a symbol of knowledge. Nursing uniforms are an important part of the job. There are numerous reasons that uniform scrubs should be used. Although health care professionals like nurses have taken increasingly stringent care to prevent the spread of germs, especially with the advent of particularly virulent bugs like MRSA, it's often a losing battle especially because clothing can harbor germs hand washing and other protective measures simply can't take care of. And that perhaps, is the most compelling argument for wearing uniforms. There are just as compelling reasons why the nursing uniforms you choose to wear should fit properly. How the fit of your work clothes affects your work should not be overlooked.
Nursing uniforms are an important part of the job. There are numerous reasons that uniform scrubs should be used, and even more reasons the nursing uniforms you choose to wear fit properly. There are so many different options available on the market and at affordable prices, that it is easy to overlook how these uniforms might be affecting your work. In order to better understand how to properly fit yourself for nursing uniforms; it's a good idea to understand the reasons you should be aware of how your clothes fit.
Originally, uniform scrubs were boxy unisex pants and tops. Colors were limited to blue, green and white. The feel was pure comfort; the look was less than flattering to most females who had hips that were anything but straight and narrow. And if you happened to be a size XS female you had other challenges, such as pants that were a foot too long with a crotch that hung between your knees and a top whose V-neck exposed your navel. What was needed were uniform scrubs that flattered the female figure.
In the 1980's traditional nursing uniforms permanently gave way to uniform scrubs. Originally worn solely in the operating, uniform scrubs found their way into all areas of hospital nursing and into doctor and dental offices. Companies such as Cherokee Scrubs and Dickies Scrubs expanded the unisex scrub into a uniform scrub line with figure flattering styles for all body shapes. And thus, the modern era of uniform scrubs began.
In order for medical scrubs to flatter your figure it is important to be aware of which styles look best on your body. Do front zip, flat front pants pull across your abdomen. Does an elastic waist make you look to "poufy". Do you need to wear petite pants, whose main advantages are a shorter rise in the crotch and shorter legs. By selecting styles that compliment your figure you will have less pulling and tugging on your uniforms and greater ease of movement for bending. It is also important to remember to not wear scrub tops whose neckline is too low so that you have to constantly put a hand to the neck opening when bending over a patient.It is far easier to work and bend easier when your uniforms are not too tight to constrict movement or too big to get caught on every little hook or knob that you walk by. The fatigue of working long shifts can easily be aggravated by uniforms that are a constant fit problem.
Uniforms that fit you properly and styles that compliment your body will actually flatter your figure and accentuate the design of the clothing as it was intended. There is no rule in the nursing manual that says nurses should not feel good about what they wear. With all the new uniform scrub styles and the myriad of colors available it is easy to create a coordinated work wardrobe to be proud of.
