Choosing Fabric for Upholstery
If you are interested in re-upholstering some of your furniture there are several things you need to keep in mind. That's because if you just buy any type of fabric without considering things like thread count, style, durability, color, and the like then you may find yourself re-upholstering the furniture again in no time. This only adds to your expense and time involved so consider the following elements before you choose fabric to upholster your furniture.
Thread Count
If you are looking for an upholstery fabric that is durable and will last for many years you will want to find a high thread count fabric. Even if you plan on re-upholstering in just a year or two you will still benefit from a high thread count fabric simply because it wears better. It will look better in your home, too.
Style
The style of the fabric is really important and should be considered in relation to the piece of furniture it will be used on as well as the style and size of the room. Make sure the fabric will work well with other pieces of furniture and their respective upholstery, too.
Durability
The upholstery you choose should reflect how durable it needs to be. For example, if you are covering a chair in the dining room that is more for looks than sitting then it's okay to use a silk fabric or some other fabric that is not as durable. However, if you are choosing a fabric for a piece of furniture that has lots of traffic you will need to choose upholstery that is tightly woven and really durable.
Color
You may be dreaming of all white upholstery, however if this "dream" includes the nightmare of trying to keep white fabric clean then go for it. Otherwise, you will want to rethink your color choice. Choose a color that hides dirt and stains and that will blend in well with your other furniture and the room's color scheme.
Some other things you will want to keep in mind when shopping for upholstery is to ensure that the fabric is fade resistant. Lots of fabric fade quite easily when in sunlight so to avoid this you need to find fabric that will resist sunlight. Also, be sure to buy enough fabric. The last thing you want is to not have enough fabric to make stripes line up or to cover up the entire piece of furniture. It's always nice to have extra fabric should you need to make a patch later on.

How do I sew velcro onto the back of a Persian rug?
It's like a Persian rug (much less expensive--a rustic rug for our lodge-style home that's perfect as a wallhanging, but we want to hang the rug like a tapestry using velcro against a velcro-stapled board (as they do in museums). The problem is that the weaving is so virtually impenetrable that I'm breaking needles, fraying thread, creating callouses, dying a slow death 
This will take me next to forever. There must be a better way than doing this by hand. Or, am I simply using the wrong equipment? I'm using curved upholstery needles, thimbles, upholstery thread (the thread often frays or comes out of its knot!), pliers (for the intense pushing of the needles through the shield-like rug backing. Please help!
I just need to sew a two-inch strip that's about 6 ft. in length, but I've spent half a day sewing about 3 inches!
Instead of sewing on the Velcro, use a stapler, with the flat side of the staple on the back of the rug. The bent prongs will be hidden in the nap of the weave on the front side.
If you have to sew it, use a very thick upholstry needle, or one for counted cross stitch. The needle is very heavy and has a broad eye. Use a small piece of rubbery plastic to grip the needle as it goes through the Velcro and rug. Use quilting thread or buttonhole twist, doubled and run through a piece of candle or beeswax.
