It depends on what class of women you are interested in. The more affluent ones wore very restrictive clothes that looked extremely elegant but must have been sheer torture. The lower orders wore less uncomfortable garb as they had to work, and stays and fripperies would have been totally impractical. However since washing facilities were elementary and roads barely better than dirt tracks, those long skirts must have been permanently dirty.Still they needed the skirts, petticoats and drawers to keep the cold at bay, as heating facilities were limited, though those who had to accompany their husbands to the far outposts of the Empire must have sweltered in places like India and Africa.
Our modern way of dress is far less attractive, but liberating and
more suitable to present day conditions. Pity modern textiles show every bulge, evry knicker elastic, and that some women do not realise how ridiculous they look wearing what is tantamount to glorified underwear thinking that it makes them more attractive.
