Please help! What does bust mean on ebay?
So I want to make a dress and I'm looking at dress patterns on ebay. For example this one:

It says it's size 16 and the bust is 34, which doesn't sound like a modern size 16 because it's quite small if you're measuring your bust ALL THE WAY ROUND (including your back). So I'm guessing it's the 'vintage' size because people were probably thinner back then. But I'm now wondering whether the bust is measured like the modern day bra. I'm a 34B, so does that mean I'd fit into the above dress or not?

A vintage size 16 will fit a 34 inch bust. That's the correct size. It's not wrong. The sizes on vintage patterns are very, very different from today's sizes. Indeed they are different animals all together and bear absolutely no relation to each other. A vintage size 16 does have a bust of 34, that's not a mistake...that's what a size 16 was back many decades ago. A vintage size ten is close to a modern size 0. ALWAYS buy patterns -modern or vintage -according to your measurements, not according to the size number. This is especially true for vintage patterns where the sizes are so radically different from modern sizes. Size scales for sewing pattern go through adjustments every decade to respond to the changes in fashion and people bodies. Back in the 20's patterns were made for a woman who was 5 feet 4 inches and who wore a bandeau to keep her bust flat. In the late 40's patterns were designed for a 5 foot five woman who wore a very tight girdle. By the seventies the pattern were for a woman about 5 6 to 5 8 with a natural un-girdled figure. The sizes have remained the same since then with only a few refinements and tweaks here and there. At this moment pattern sizes and store bought clothing sizes have never been farther apart as stores are not required to follow any type of sizing standards.
So if the pattern says size 16 with a bust of 34 inches then it 100% accurate, size 16 was a lot smaller back then than it is today. As a 34B you will take a vintage size 16. Again...the size number means nothing, it's just an arbitrary number someone made up so don't get upset about it. They really are that different from today;s sizes.
Edit: the pattern is being sold by its vintage size, which is printed on the envelope on the lower right corner by the price. it is marked Size 16 Bust 34. That is correct for the 1950's even if it seems weird to us 21st century people. Vintage patterns are usually sold by the vintage size on the envelope, which bears no relation to modern sizes.
