Did World War 1 really mark the ending of the "Victorian Era"? (despite being 15 years later)?

how life and society really changed in the build up and during and after WWI?

Yes. Though more properly, several events of the 1910s (1911-1920) brought about the end of the Belle Epoque; WWI, or the Great War as it was then called, signaled the death knell for the Age of Empires, the final blow of which was the Second World War.

The Victorian Era, also called the Pax Britannica, was one of relative European peace. Europe mostly hummed right along through the Industrial Revolution. There were a few brief skirmishes, the Franco-Prussian War, The Crimean War, and horrific wars in India, China, etc., but most of those took place out of sight – and mind – of Europeans.

Immense fortunes began to be amassed, upward social mobility was increasingly possible, and the world was made smaller through advances in travel technology (trains, steamships, the Suez Canal, etc.). But with progress came an increased sense of value of the common man; perhaps individual men weren't just the playthings of some inscrutable deity, but creatures capable of self-determination.

As the age wore on, it became increasingly self-satisfied, and much of the literature and art reflects this. Playwrights like Shaw and Wilde wrote entertaining, but vaguely superficial works. Pierre Louis led a Parisian literary movement concerned with eroticism. Socialism began to appear, but originated not in the working classes, but in the well-to-do.

And then came the 20th Century. Upstart nations like the US and Japan challenged the status quo. The Titanic disaster exposed the hubris of the Victorian Age - that man could think himself indestructible. The Great War (WWI) did it again, but with frightening carnage. Nations like Germany and Russia bankrupted themselves - and starved their people - to fight. Britain and France demanded soldiers from all their colonies - Ghurkas and Indonesians fought alongside Australians and New Zealanders and Canadians.

When the war ended, most colonies were furious with their European masters and began the processes that would lead to independence. Untouched by the war, America - a nation of immigrants and commoners - became the world's bank & major industrial power. Russia underwent a bloody revolution that threw out it's Victorian-Era Tsar (Queen Victoria's very own grandson) and replaced them with ordinary men. Japan seized Germany’s Chinese colonies and set itself firmly on the path toward expansion.

It was the beginning of the age of the Common Man - as Franklin Roosevelt would later say. It was popularized (for English-speakers) by war poets like Keats & Sassoon & Graves. Movies, too, found their greatest success in stories about ordinary people doing ordinary - and occasionally extraordinary - things.

Labor unions, universal suffrage, labor laws – all unimaginable during the Victorian Era - gave the common man access to better living standards, health care, etc. Like the movies (which were silent at the time), radio found its greatest audience not in the classes but in the masses. Freedom of the press became far more universal, and with it came an emboldened sense of self; people were far more willing to hold governments - and individuals - responsible for their actions, and to punish them accordingly.

The Victorian Era – and the Edwardian Era was really no different - was one of (relative) peace and order - a world which worked according to the master plan of some benevolent deity, and one in which everyone had a certain place. After World War One - and World War Two - that absurd notion was finally and irrevocably shattered forever.
